Your time is valuable, spend it giving back to those in need.

Volunteer in Long Beach this holiday season. It will warm hearts and feed the souls of many people in our community. Here are just a few organizations that need your help.

Urban Community Outreach

Urban Community Outreach offers safe temporary shelter, food, support services, and help homeless families and individuals become self-sufficient.  They host its drop-in center every Sunday at the First Congregational Church 241 Cedar Ave. You can volunteer on Sundays for a few hours, or for the whole day.

Volunteers should report at/after 9:00 am to help with food prep. Volunteers scheduled to help with serving meals and clean-up should also report at/after 9:00 am. report to the same location above. The drop-in center begins lunch service at 1:30 pm and remains open until 4:30 pm. 

All volunteers serving meals must be at the center at 1 PM to attend a mandatory Volunteer Orientation session.

Assistance League of Long Beach

It’s a nonprofit corporation that identifies and delivers philanthropic services, helping children and adults in the Long Beach Community. The numerous philanthropic programs include providing low-cost orthodontic care and new school uniforms for children in need; scholarships for deserving California State University, Long Beach, and Long Beach City College students; school tours of the Howard and Asian Art Collection; basic reading skills instruction for K-1 students having difficulty learning; and the Kids on the Block puppet presentations.

Celebrating 25 years of turning college dreams into reality for Long Beach Youth. Operation Jump Start helps first-generation students get in and graduate from four-year colleges. They are looking for mentors to work with students.

Long Beach Rescue Mission

The Long Beach Rescue Mission serves the emergency needs of the hungry and homeless of the greater Long Beach area through shelter and food services, rehabilitation programs, spiritually-based counseling, education, and job skills classes and transitional housing. Their doors are open 365 days a year, which means they need plenty of people. With so many options – from serving meals or playing worship music to mentoring and tutoring the people in their New Life Program.

Ronald McDonald House Long Beach

Ronald McDonald House is a place where families can stay together while caring for a critically ill child. Hundreds of volunteers over the years have helped in a variety of ways, including one-time group volunteer activities, helping staff special House events, and helping support day-to-day House operations and projects.  

AIDS Food Store Long Beach

AIDS Food Store is the longest-serving HIV/AIDS food provider in Southern California and has been in operation since 1985. The organization helps assure that people in the Long Beach area living with HIV/AIDS disabilities are never without food, love, and support. Volunteers are needed for the Grocery Distribution Days on select Tuesdays or Saturdays, or at one of their special events.

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach

MOWLB  prepares and delivers two nutritionally balanced meals per day at a low cost for people who need to remain in their own homes due to age or illness. Volunteer opportunities include drivers, friendly visitors, food packers, and office support. 

Fisher House Southern California

VA Long Beach Healthcare System Fisher House is a beautiful home away from home for the families of Veterans and military service members receiving care at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The Fisher House provides temporary lodging in a comfortable and relaxed setting, only steps away from the medical facility. Guests can stay at the Fisher House at no cost for as long as their loved one is hospitalized. Volunteers provide many important functions throughout the Medical Center and help make our patients' stay more enjoyable. Volunteers can perform a number of services, and a volunteer's talents are closely matched with one of our many assignments.

They protect and shelter homeless companion animals, place animals into humane environments, and promote responsible pet ownership and reduce animal overpopulation. The shelter relies heavily on volunteers.
