Long Beach is known as a city of trendsetters— a haven for people that think outside of the box, march to the tune of a different drummer, or just completely ditch the march and drummer altogether—we'll tango to our inner beat box, thank you very much.

So it's no surprise that "alternative" approaches to food aren't so alternative here. In fact, Long Beach has a well established spread of vegan eateries ranging from long established local favorites, ethnically inspired eats, daring plant only takes on comfort food standards, and word of mouth (and Tweet) pop ups offering dishes so tasty, you'll even invite your non-vegan pals for a bite.

Here're a few of our favorite spots to tuck into naturally delicious, plant based dishes.

The Grain Cafe

With flavors and traditions rooted in the spices and cooking styles of Oaxaca, Mexico, The Grain Cafe offers a wide array of vegan takes on classic dishes, including a delicious selection of south of the border favorites, grain based salads, and savory crepes.

The HipPea

Specializing in three things- falafel, hummus, and fries (and every possible combination of the three, including pita wraps, cones, and salads), the HipPea is a veganista's fresh take on fast food. It's a great spot to grab a tasty vegan bite on the go and stroll around Retro Row.

Ahimsa Vegan Cafe

With the Ahimsa Burger made with their house made veggie patty, hippy salad made with a mix of greens, sprouts, seeds, and grilled tempeh, and Vietnamese spring rolls with ginger dressing rounding out the top of their list customer favorites, it's clear that this vegan spot has choices for everyone. Most dishes fall into the salad, wrap, bowl, or sandwich/burger category, and cover the bases from Latin, Asian, Mediterranean, and farmer's market inspired.

I Love Vegan

A hands down local favorite, I Love Vegan serves authentic Thai food with an emphasis on fresh herbs, bold flavors, and spice, using only vegan ingredients. Don't miss out on their sweet, savory, and chile infused salads, stir fries, soups, curries, and fried rice dishes.

The Wild Chive

An on the go, pop-up affair spanning two semi permanent spaces weekly and satisfying those in need of delicious vegan eats around town at various food festivals and events, The Wild Chive serves plant-based comfort food with a fusion flair. Catch their vegan brunch every Sunday at Portfolio Coffeehouse, and Wednesday dinner at Berlin Bistro.

Anandamide Psychedelicatessan

If you're not yet familiar with the world of vegan chocolates, look no further. Anandamide Psychedelicatessan specializes in in-house "engineered" ganache filled chocolate truffles (try the guava butter filled for a tropical treat), maca, nut, and fungi (yes, fungi) infused chocolate bars, and indulgent fudges. They're the perfect specialty treat, and even are available in gift box form for your next vegan-friendly host or hostess gift.

New Rose Vegan

Another foodie favorite vegan gourmet pop up, New Rose specializes in handcrafted pies including "chicken" pot pie, chili "cheese" pie and farm fresh fruit pies. They also make quiches, braised jackfruit machaca, monte cristo sandwiches, and sliders. The menu and location of pop ups and venues changes often, so be sure to follow them on Instagram for the latest updates.

Seabirds Kitchen

Starting off as a seriously crave-able vegan food truck and growing into its current brick and mortar location, Seabirds bases their menu around seasonal produce, unique flavor combinations, and locally sourced ingredients. Their veggie tacos are outstanding, with jackfruit and kimchi, beer battered avocado, and grilled mushrooms as filling options, and their bowls, beet burger, and Mexican style dishes are not to be missed.

Viva Falafel

A newcomer to the Long Beach vegan scene, Viva Falafel serves up veggie versions of Mediterranean classics like (you guessed it) falafel, "beef" and "chicken" pita wraps, and fresh salads.

Appu's Cafe

While it's not strictly a vegan joint, Appu's is vegetarian across the board and features many vegan options including burritos, salads, soups, and sandwiches.  They also offer an extensive menu of teas, coffees, smoothies, and snacks.

Steamed Organic Vegetarian Cuisine

Another spot that's strictly vegetarian, Steamed Organic Vegetarian Cuisine offers all of their menu items in a vegan version. They have an impressive menu of multicolored salads, gourmet quesadillas and burritos, salsa and guacamole topped rice bowls, sandwiches, and wraps. It's the perfect spot to get your fresh fare fix.
